THE POSITION

Make the invisible contribution visible.

3M's technologies touch everyday life in ways most people never notice. That creates an unusual branding challenge: a company can be essential to an experience without being recognized for making it possible.

Science. Applied to Life. changes the focus from what 3M invents to what those inventions enable. The 2022 Science Is… film continues that broader idea.

The strategic choice is to make scientific contribution recognizable through human relevance.

01 — THE MOVE

Move from technical expertise to human value.

3M could have built its corporate identity around its patents, scientific breakthroughs, or extensive product portfolio.

Instead, Science. Applied to Life. connects the company's technological capabilities to the everyday situations in which they matter.

This was a significant choice for a company operating across multiple industries. In 2015, 3M introduced a unified brand platform designed to communicate the common purpose behind otherwise very different businesses. Its launch included digital films, a redesigned website, and an experiential installation at SXSW.

‍

The strategy didn't reduce 3M's technical complexity. It gave that complexity a common meaning.

Science remained the source of credibility. Life became the reason to care.

02 — THE THINKING

People value what technology makes possible.

The challenge for a diversified industrial company is that customers experience the benefits of its technology without necessarily recognizing the company behind them.

A safer journey, a more effective manufacturing process, or a better-performing material can matter enormously to the people who depend on it. But the science enabling those outcomes often stays out of sight.

3M's brand platform addresses that disconnect.

The company reported consulting 15,000 customers across 15 countries while developing the original positioning. The research reinforced the importance of connecting 3M's scientific expertise to practical solutions.

That connection gives the brand a shared purpose across very different products.

The emotional mechanism is not excitement about science for its own sake. It is recognition that science improves experiences people already value.

By making those outcomes visible, 3M gives its technical capabilities a meaning that extends beyond product specifications.

03 — THE IMPACT

One meaning across thousands of products.

The strategic significance of Science. Applied to Life. is its ability to connect a highly diversified portfolio under one recognizable proposition.

Different businesses can demonstrate different applications while reinforcing the same corporate identity.

The original launch brought that idea into digital advertising, product stories, brand design, and live experiences. The later Science Is… film indicates that human-centered science remained useful as a communication territory years afterward.

That continuity matters more than any individual execution. It allows 3M to introduce new technologies without having to invent a new explanation for why the company matters.

The science may change. The human value gives the brand continuity.

THE MOVE, IN ONE THOUGHT

3M made invisible science meaningful by connecting technical capability to the everyday experiences it enables.
